| Girl Power |
Girl Power is a student-to-student mentoring program that pairs middle school girls with high school girls who serve as mentors. Meetings are held after school, during which the high school leaders conduct valuable lessons that address issues middle school girls face every day. Middle school girls are encouraged to share any positive news, concerns or problems they may have. The high school leaders are there to listen and to offer support and guidance when needed.
Girl Power helps middle school girls build self-esteem, learn the importance of community service and most importantly, benefit from a valuable relationship with a high school Girl Power mentor. In turn, the high school leaders gain a sense of accomplishment knowing they’ve helped make a difference in the lives of many young girls. This program takes place at Vernon, Sparta and Jefferson High Schools. Adult leaders are needed for all three programs.

This alliance is a partnership between Pass It Along, the Sussex County College Center for Diversity and Equality, and Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault Intervention Services. Become part of a group that consists of SCCC students and other community members whose goal is to reduce the numbers of power-based violence in Sussex County. This alliance will afford members the opportunities to learn about the Green Dot Strategy, a comprehensive approach to violence prevention that capitalizes on the power of peer influence that targets all community members as potential bystanders, and seeks to engage them, through awareness, education and skills practice, in proactive behaviors that establish intolerance of violence as the norm, as well as reactive interventions in high risk situations, ultimately resulting in the reduction of violence in our community. Simply put, Green Dots are individual choices that meet in a shared vision creating the momentum of a social movement. The Alliance meets twice a month at the Center for Diversity & Equality at SCCC. For more information contact Raffaella Bonventre or call the office at 973-726-9777. |

Ben's Bells |
After losing their son, Ben at 3 years old his family
founded the Ben's Bells project as part of a coping
strategy. They came up with a design for Ben’s Bells and
started making them with friends. The therapeutic effect of
working with clay was amazing as was the power of being
surrounded by people talking and working toward a common
goal. Ben’s Bells symbolize kindness and its power in
healing. Annually hundreds of the Bells are distributed
randomly throughout the community to encourage kindness.
This program meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month to
design, make and paint the charms that will become Ben's
Bells. Bring a Buck policy: Volunteers are asked to bring $1 to help offset the cost of the materials. For more information and to register for this program
please contact Cassie at cassieshugart@yahoo.com at or call
the office at 973-726-9777. |
